i know we haven't been on here for a while, but i thought it was quite interesting to see the post regarding colds today...
We just got back from the vet and Leo and Shadow have been diagnosed with kennel cough today. they haven't been anywhere except home, and as you know they haven't been at classes for a couple of weeks, but we thought we'd better let you know! Regarding zoonosis/zoomosis [i know conflicting spellings exist] there is only one type of kennel cough that can zoomose , a bacterial one known as bordetella, and it's usually between dogs and guinea pigs as opposed to humans. [although funnily enough, me and mum have also been down with the cold and coughs this week!] we've been told not to go to classes for a week or two more just in case. I cross posted between two threads just to let everyone know. the gruesome twosome don't seem to mind right enough, Leo is currently sprawled on the floor and Shadow is hovering about the sofa. they have a course of antibiotics and everything seems to be improving, so it's just a case of wait and see i think! |

I hope they recover quickly Amy.
It's always a concern when they are poorly. _________________ "My little dog - a heartbeat at my feet" - Edith Wharton |

Interesting to hear of an actual confirmed diagnosis!
I'm sure they'll be as right as rain in no time. 5 days worth of anitibiotics certainly cleared up whatever one of my dogs had!
My other dog has been sneezing for the past few days, but she's generally fine and her usual self. |

I understand that in cases of kennel cough, antibiotics are prescribed only to prevent secondary bacterial infections e.g. pneumonia. Rest and steam inhalation are meant to be the best treatments. _________________ "My little dog - a heartbeat at my feet" - Edith Wharton |

Yes, that's what I believe too. The vet did tell me that the antibiotics were to prevent secondary infections like pneumonia. The antibiotics have definately helped though, she's back to her normal self now, no coughing, sneezing or gasping for breath. |

Koda has always been quite a sneezy dog, but the last few days he has been getting a lot worse, but other than that he seems fine. Its just when he wakes up he sneezes quite a bit, and lately he has been randomly snorting, is this just a wee cold he has? |

Kendal,
I know what you mean about dogs playing then sneezing ....Molly and Roxy sneeze in sync after they have been play wrestling, it's so funny. |

Maybe he's pretending to be allergic to them in an attempt to get rid of them. |
