So I was out taking Tilly for a walk and there is a bridge that goes over the marsh land. I saw something in the water and as I got closer I saw that it was a dead heron, I don't really want to leave it there but I'm not jumping in for it.

Does anyone know who should be contacted about this?

I don't know the answer but the SSPCA might.

Sorry if I sound unfeeling or ignorant, but what is the issue?

All life, including wildlife, comes to an end sometime.. the heron's remains will now provide nutrition for the land and help support the environment. It's just the way thing are... it's just nature.

It's because it was a healthy heron yesterday and now its belly up with its neck all twisted, I thought they were protected or something and something may have happened to it.

Thanks Gaelle will phone them tomorrow, I can't find a contact number for this late at night

We saw it this morning. Decided it must have been shot - cannot think of any other predators that a heron may have. Very upsetting, despite what Stuart says.

If its at Dumbreck Marsh, dont know if maybe the Countryside Rangers will go get it? they are based up at Palacerigg, 01236 780636 (I think - they are in the Conservation and Greening Unit)

Enid, I don't appreciate your tone. From what Anna originally posted, it was fair enough for me to ask what I did.

If it was shot, then absolutely.. call the SSPCA and lets hunt down the vicious thugs that did it.. but with regards to my original post, it could just have died.. stranger things have happened. Rolling Eyes

Just a comment, Stuart. Absolutely no "tone" intended. Confused Please don't take it that way.

I find the death of any creature upsetting, even in the balance of nature. I'm just a big softy at heart. Embarassed

I would have said just leave it..it is upsetting but it is nature.

but if you have suspicions of its death then def. report it....thing is you would really need to have a good look at it to see if it had been shot, as birds do just die and it may not have been the same one you saw the other day....not sure how they live if in pairs or not. also could have been poisoned as there are some sick b*****s out there or eaten a slug that had eaten slug pellets, I dont know the area if it is near houses or not

I dont like death either in birds or animals and would probably had Allan have a look at it if it was me that found it Sad

Stuart and Enid shake hands I know sometimes the typed word comes across different to how it would spoken Very Happy

Herons usually live by themselves so this would have been his 'home' so to speak. It's worrying because there are 2 swans that live there and have a nest, don't want anything happening to the little swans aswell

there are a lot of sick people out there that find it amusing to harm animals! how long until they get bored and move onto children or others.

both my cats have gone missing one about 9 weeks ago and the other a week past Saturday and i miss them dearly.

i was trying not to think about what could have happened them and console myself with the possibility that someone had taken a fancy to them and stole them or that shadow the most recent to go missing was locked in a shed.

however, my neighbour's cat turned up home a few nights ago all slashed and she took it to the vet thinking it had got into a fight but they informed her the slashes were most likely made by a knife.

i am gutted that this may be the reason my cats disappeared.

sorry getting a bit upset if i get my hands on them i will kill!!!!!!!!!!!!! no question.
