Why do dogs howl (not from pain)? Is it a form of communication? I just wonder as Cuthbert did this for the first time today when we were out and he was with another dog. He just sat down, put his head back and howled like a wolf. I'm just interested if anyone knows.

It's definately a form of communication Gaelle, usually to call others to the "howler" but why he should have done it today for the first time ever Confused Do you think he felt under pressure or threatened by the other dog for any reason? Maybe there was the scent of a bitch in heat in the air Confused Could be many reasons but I now have an image in my head of Cubs that I can't shake - bless him!!!! Very Happy

Thanks Jack. I think perhaps it was something to do with wanting to play as he knows the other dog well who was off lead at the time and he wasn't (too near a road for my liking plus the rain was pouring down and both us owners wanted home out of it!!). He did not look under any pressure as he had been loping about a bit with him prior to that. Possible?
It was funny to witness though! Laughing Laughing Laughing

That makes sense Gaelle......a protest howl at you not allowing him to play AND calling his pal over to try and encourage you to give in.....as he wasn't allowed off the lead to play he was just calling his buddy over to play right at your feet - bet you're glad they didn't!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Such a sweet image!!! Cuddles to the daft lump from me please Gaelle! Razz

As soon as he wakes up Jack, no problem. You know the old adage about letting sleeping dogs lie? Definitely in this case. Sssh when he wakens he'll chew and I'm running out of intact shoes!!! Laughing Laughing

Confused All they do if me & Sykes are playing the howling game is jump on him and playfight Rolling Eyes so we never get to do it much these days!

That's good to know. Yoda howls all the time and you can make her howl if you have a squeaky toy.

They both do it when they are excited or happy!! Very Happy Very Happy
