Hello,

Although I'm very hopeful that arthritis won't be a problem for Dexter for many years to come I'm wondering if there are any supplements I should be giving him just now? Dexter, although pedigree GSD, was a rescue pup and so we don't have any information as to health of his parents or any issues that may be hereditary.

Hi Cat
I've met both his parents. His mum is 9 and very sprightly. She is in excellent health. His dad is fit and healthy too although I don't know what age he is. They are both lovely dogs. Some people supplement with Chondroitin and Glucosamine which are widely available but used more in older dogs. Some people believe cod liver oil supplements help too. I don't give Cleo and Tubbs any supplements but I know that the food I give them has added vitamins to help their joints. Most foods for large breeds or senior dogs do I think.
Bebe and Diesel are really nice dogs, fit and healthy too.
Hope this helps.

That's good to know. Our last GSD had hip problems but by the time he was showing the symptoms it became more about pain management rather than anything else and I'd like to prevent that happening to Dexter if possible, especially since he's quite a heavy set dog, but it's good to know his parents are healthy!
