Hi folks.
I have a question. Cuthbert now needs his ears cleaned out twice a week and we have been using Epi Otic as prescribed by our vet but am waiting for delivery of a more natural and less harsh lotion to arrive but I won't be able to get it until next week. In the meantime any suggestions? They are not infected just waxy and a bit inflamed. Suggestions would be welcome. Thanks. _________________ Happiness is watching my dog chase leaves dancing in the breeze. |

Quistel is fab, i only used it a couple of times, that was months ago and i now get hardly any wax out of Gypsys ears with normal ear cleaner. i did Gypsy, Inca and Echo with it about three times and i still have over a third of the bottle left. _________________ microchiping and grooming www.chipnclip.co.uk

Poodle ears tend to harbour wax and mites. When I adopted the gruesome twosome, their ears were obviously irritated and almost compacted with wax and hair. Once I removed the excess hair, copious wax was secreted for 'ages'. The advice from the Kennel Club Rep, who also breeds Standards, was to use Thornits powder (as used by the show fraternity). Available on line, a weekly pinch of powder around the ears is well tolerated by the dogs, and is the most inexpensive and effective aid to healthy ears I have ever used. As with homeopathic and other alternative therapies this may not be rated by your vet....!

When we did the trainer training at Alexandria the guy there, Jim told us to turn Lukas ears inside out
when he was sleeping or resting....if you know what I mean........it lets the air get in better, he had a cocker and spaniels
seem more prone to ear probs with their floppy ears
We do this with luka from time to time when we think about it _________________ lurchers Pixel and Zev and whippet, Fen

Ear cleaning and medicating can be messy so cover good clothes and work on a surface that is easy to clean.
Most dogs do not like having their ears cleaned. Some dogs will happily sit in your lap or on a table while you clean or medicate their ears but many require some form of restraint.
One method to restrain the dog is to place her/him on a table. Stand on the side of the table opposite to the ear you are medicating; in the photograph the right ear is being medicated. |
