Ok need some help, no matter how much I practice at home (and I do even although it doesn't look that way with Mylo) and in class Mylo wont go into the down, I have also tried standing over him but he ends up making that much fuss he claws my legs by accident, any other suggestions how a can get Mylo to go into down it's starting to do my head in now |

Cara wouldn't do the down for ages. 5 years if i'm correct
But i got her to do it.
I sat on the floor with my knees slightly arched, but not so much she could fit through, and if she was sitting on my left i'd hold the treat in my right hand. I'd then show her that the treat is on the other side and she'd have to "comando" crawl under my legs to get it, and once she was in that position, my knees still over her i'd say down and give her the biscuit.
It will eventually get to the point were you can do that, tell him down, and stand up, then just tell him down
Hope that made sense and helps you _________________ Elizabeth and Cara

Murphy doesnt do this either. Ive tried everything.
I end up pulling down his legs (gently of course) so he ends up in the down position, say "down" and give him the treat whilst he is in that position. Doesn't sink in though, and if I push it too much with him then he gets REALLY grumpy since he is a bit food aggressive. All he wants is the food and its like he doesnt even hear what Im saying! _________________ Ashley with Holly & Murphy.

Down you have to be joking. Bubbles dosen`t do down. I`m sure she has springs underneath which forces her back up the minute she lies down. The only time she lies down at the moment is when she is being a little tramp. _________________ My life belongs to a Collie |

Maybe you should change your command to 'down for the boys!' then? |

probably a bit obvious....Otto will do down on a carpet and grass far more readily than on concrete or wood given his bony legs.
We had a bit of bother with it in class, but he was fine at home. But it's also something they don't like as it's a submissive position. I found saying it in a low voice made a difference.
If he's being an ar&e he puts his front down then keeps his bum up and does a bit of breakdancing!! |

Dodge has just started going 'down' from a stand position and I have been trying to get him to do it since I have had him, two years now.
High value food helps, he will do just about anything for a whole frankfurter or sometimes for liver cake. Now I know that he actually knows how to do it I am working on it daily and he is getting better.
For the last two years he didnt seem to get the concept of going from stand to down, he would do it ok from a sit position. seems to be a hard one for some bigger dogs. Keep trying it from a sitting start, that way they know what position they SHOULD be in in Down _________________ "In a perfect world, every dog would have a home and every home would have a dog." |

Yeah, we've taught it from a sitting start and he only got the treat when the bum went down. If he didn't do it I just said uh oh, stood up and and started it all over again.
I haven't taught him to do it from standing or from a distance... |

As i think Kirsty mentioned? this is one if not thee most submissive sole action you would normally ask your dog to do! I,ve taught Tikka from an early age, not just with treats but toys and such like items. Most will give you a bit of back chat, lip etc, but once mastered can be an excellent method to calm or control your dog at various times. Always try and make sure your dog relaxes to the side, this may be a further/next step, but they are then much less likely to come out or get up from your 'down' command without prompt! _________________ Barry, Kylie & Jay with precious Rotti Tikka |

This something I definitely can't see happening with Holly or Murphy (if he ever decides that he will do just 'down'). Its something I've now noticed with both of them,..... they always lie straight down... like a Sphinx. Only time they dont is if they go to curl up for a wee snooze!
Will be interesting to see if RossM's wee Cav Giles does this too... then it may just be a breed thing!?? _________________ Ashley with Holly & Murphy.

so, when I visit Scotland next, if I shout 'Down' to your class John, will all the adults start lying on the floor?
