Chatting to someone about collies yesterday and she insisted she'd never choose a dog with light eyes, because 'they're all crazy', with a strong work drive. However she reckoned that shepherds didn't want light eyed dogs because they they were too unpredictable.

I've also heard that light eyed dogs were less affectionate.

This reminded me of the theory that dogs with a lot of black on the roof of the mouth made good working dogs.

Is it only among collies that there are these kind of tales or do other breeds have them as well?

P.S. Dale isn't really crazy, just a bit eccentric at times, and he 's very loving. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Janice,

I've heard the one where dogs with light coloured/hazel coloured eyes are a bit crazy! I know of a Yellow Lab, a rescue dog, who has hazel coloured eyes who is an absolute handful! Shocked This is probably down to poor socialisation when the dog was younger though, however, I also think it has something to do with her hormones - I think this dog has a hormonal imbalance.

I also know of a Yellow Lab cross, who is also a rescue dog, who has hazel eyes who is an absolute joy, no bother at all. Mixes well with other dogs and is well trained.

I therefore think that this saying is just a tale, and it's perhaps just a coincidence if there are dogs who fit the theory. Very Happy

I had read years ago that farmers were put off pups with pale blue eyes as they were a bit unpredictable, and another one is brown labs and brown dobermans were more likely to be hyperactive and hard to train due to the their red colouring, I have to admit dont know if this is true or just a myth, I know a lot of lovely brown labs though I dont know any brown dobermans......so difficult to say

Embarassed Embarassed I'm afraid she thought Dale proved the rule. He'd just done his snapping at the dish washer tablets thing when I opened the cupboard. Glad she didn't see him herding the ironing board or me hoovering with Dale on lead Embarassed But he IS improving at least I can hoover without waiting for Mike to take him out of the house Rolling Eyes You've got to love him, but he does have some odd habits.
