Puppy being left alone... is it ok?

I get my crates from www.ukdogcrates.co.uk They are great quality and very cheap.

Just bought the Giant size for Jake and it cost under £50 and their crates have the metal tray not the plastic ones, and with a puppy trust me you will want the metal ones. Came home one day and Star had eaten most of his plastic tray Shocked

When we first got Otto, I fed him in it and also went in myself and he got the hang of it. And just shut him in it for 10 mins at various intervals.

He was ok in it for a few hours at a time, plus all night (after the night of the long howl when we had to ignore him till 4am before he'd sleep in it) At first we let him out around 4 am, but from 4 months he was dry all night. I've only ever had 4 pees in the house and I have the crate to thank for that.

I've always shut the door when I'm not there to supervise, otherwise why have it? It gave me peace of mind that he is safe (as well as my house). He gets a bit more freedom now and is generally only shut in at night or when we're out. He will lie in it with the door open if I'm in the kitchen.

He gets a kong when we're going out and now knows the minute he sees it to go in the crate. Similarly at night, living room light goes off and he knows its pee then bed. I put a blanket over it.

It becomes part of their routine in the end. I wouldn't trust him not to be in it for longer periods - I'd go through a dishcloth a day. Plus keeps him out the bin.

I always take his collar off him though just in case - and never left anything he could choke on. Once they're used to it, they just sleep till you come back. You just have to ignore the moaning at the start because of course they'd rather not be in it.

Just my personal opinion but I think there is more chance of accident if they are free to roam unsupervised. My lot are free to wonder as long as I am around and not to busy, but when I am out there is a strict door closed policy! Laughing

ah ok! I have that fear with Jenna. Just that it might be me and her in ourselves and if I have a accident what would she do! I always say to her to phone 999 or go next door to get help but just worry.

I tend to not lock my front door when I let Sony alone. Just in case of a fire in the house, that somebody can open the door quickly.
I know it´s kind of paranoid, and a bit stupid to post that in the net ... well ... should lock it the next time... Laughing
