If you go with beef, toss the meat in seasoned flour then brown it in a pan. Remove and set aside. heat some oil in a pan and cook some onions or shallots and a couple of cloves of garlic for 5 mins, add some root veg like carrots, parsnips or turnip whatever you fancy cook for another couple of mins then add a glass of red wine bring to the boil for a few mins. Then add some thyme, bay leaves and black pepper and some beef stock (just enough to cover it all) then throw in a casserole in an oven (180 or gas 4) for about 2 hours 15 mins . Very Happy

shove a packet of good quality beef or pork sausages in the slow cooker (or cook very slowly in a large pot) - sausages in whole (links)

Add two onions and (and a couple of carrots sliced if you want) - I leave my onions roughly sliced as I like big soft onions through the mix

add enough water to cover the mixture - do not salt.

then choose one of these two methods:

Add two oxo cubes to the water if using beef and reduce the water down

or (I prefer to do this)

Just cook in the water and at the end use the moisture that is left to mix with some bisto granules either beef or pork to go with the sausages and make a thick gravy

serve with a pile of mashed potatoes with a nob of lurpack on the top and some peas .

I use the slow cooker and cook for about 5 hours - I think it would take about 45 mins in a pot? - just until the sausages and onions are cooked and the water starts to reduce
