sam westies were originally bred for hunting vermin and foxes, they come from the same strain of dogs that produced the scottie, cairn and dandie terriers.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy nicola - i pride myself on my knowledge of breeds, we had to study them for uni, and i have countless books on breeds and dogs in general. i dont know a lot of stuff but i know my animals!

Yes you are correct 'originally' being the key word here, however the modern westie is far removed from its original use an working bloodlines and all that is left mostly is the watered down show blood. Not the same thing at all.Confused
Good workers are prized within the working terrier world, unfortunately like other breeds once they gain recognition from the KC, folk start breeding for cosmetics and to make lots of money from pups and all thoughts o good working terrier blood goes out the window . You be hard pressed to find a westie that could deal with a fox by modern breed standards.
Rare as hens teeth it would seem and vastly just a show dog now .

Sam,

I agree with you that most Westies now are not bred for working purposes now and that their popularity lies within the show world, so their natural insticts are much lower now than what they were originally, I believe. They were still originally bred for hunting vermin even if they don't do that now, which is what we stated to start with.
