It's frontline I get and it says 2 months for flees, 1 for ticks. Maybe it's different for the bigger dogs?

Should have paid attention.

Im not into using chemicals and pesticides on my dogs. Not since 7 years ago when I got Jilly, my Parson Terrier. She was just 8 weeks
old and covered in fleas, I got "stuff" from the vet. I had to bath her and leave on her coat for 15 mins. I wasnt allowed to touch it with my hands, Jilly was unwell for the next few days. Not nice for a 8 week old pup.

A few alternative that I have found work wonders

Garlic puree, just squish a bit on their food a couple of times a week.
Garlic powder/ capsules, one per day

Garlic, being related to onions, is considered by some to be harmful in the same way, but they would have to eat lots and lots of it to do them harm. Small amounts is completely harmless. Large quantities of onion, especially raw onion, causes the stomach lining to bleed, which can causes the anemia

If your dog is allergic to garlic you can try

"Billy No Mates" which is a herbal supplement made by CSJ.
Brewers' yeast tablets

Im a bit like you Carol, I dont do the dogs with anything unless they are really covered in the fleas which has only happened once, I usually go over them with a flea comb every once in a while.

Pixel takes a reaction to her booster and to the flea treatment so I try to reduce the risk....unfortunatly with where we take the dogs we need the boosters, otherwise I wouldnt bother
