i cut the girls nails for the first time

well its not really the first time i have done Gypsy's but never Inca's and never on my own. but i finally did it tonight and didn't nip the quick (that was what i was scared of doing, particularly with Inca as hers are black and you cant see it)

i only needed to do there frond paw as the back ones are fine, dose anyone ells find that they only need to trim the front nails on you dog.

I do doogles, but i made one of them bleed once, he made a right drama out of it, until food was produced then he miraculously forgot all about it, typical male

we've never had to do the boys, but we walk them on concrete often which keeps them filed down.
I can remember years ago trying to do one of our GSDs and high drama it was............ GSDs only pretend to be brave........... nail cutting = howling!

I have done beagles before. They are no problem. I got one of the Dane breeders to do the Danes in the past. Basil's are ok because we hard walk him too. But I would never try his because the quick is invisible and I have not the strength to cut the huge things.

had to do them when they were puppies just about every week to stop them scratching Doras belly when they nwere feeding, and once they were a bit older but don't need to do them now because they get hard walked alot

macella - so true! gsds are the biggest wimps at the vets! well known fact. hehehe i took ours in one time to get their blood groups tested and when i switched on the clippers to remove a teensy bit of hair from neck, breno fell to ground, crying and covering his head with his paws!! baby! hadnt even touched him yet!

I have done my dogs a few times but no more than about twice a year, it depends where they are exercised and how heavy they are on their feet as to whether the nails wear down or not

Well done Kendal I don't think I would have been brave enough.

I have asked the vet to check every year when Danny & Jack get their vaccinations but as yet, aged 8 and 7, their nails have never needed doing.

Dont think my boys need done - walk on concrete and maybe cause they are large dogs.

wot ur saying about gsd is true, was at the vets with my two dogs today and dodge was freaking out, grownling snapping shaking like a leaf. Meanwhile bob was squealing in the background because he could hear dodge and was getting totally distressed.

Oh goodness, I'm dreading having to do Hollys. Her nails are white though so hopefully that will make it easier. I've got her used to me touching her paws and nails and I keep putting the clippers near them, so when I do come to do it she will not be too skittery. Fingers crossed though. The family dog, Penny, hates getting it done and screams blue murder, even though we aren't hurting her.

Hi All,

We use potassium permanganate in our grooming salon for the dogs nails. If you nip the quick add a touch to the affected area using a cotton bud and it will help disinfect the wound and stop the bleeding. You should be able to order this from your vet or local pet store.
