Hi all

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it just seems to be going from bad to worse.

Yesterday I got a phone call from the vet to say that his swab results were back and that he had e.coli in his wound. They weren't too concerned as he was already on the right anti-biotics to deal with it and he was due back today to get his dressing changed.

They took him away as usual to get his dressing changed but instead of bringing him back I got a call to come in and see the vet to hear the 4 dreaded words. "It's not looking good" I initially thought that maybe the infection was worse than we thought, but I was totally floored when she started explaining the wound was not healing at all. The area round about the wound has started to die away and will need to be removed within the next week (whenever it completely dies.) leaving an even bigger wound. Whereas all the concern was about the blood supply to the paw, it appears that the blood vessels supplying the area above the wound is damaged and is now working it's way up the leg, which is now a major concern.

The extent of the damage will not be known for the next few weeks as apparently we are still in the destructive faze and it can take several weeks for all the damage to materialise and for the tissue to die away. There are seperate blood vessels supplying the surface and the deep tissue. As the initilal wound was through to the bone, there is no way of knowing at this stage if the deep blood vessels are damaged.

If the dead tissue stops spreading up the leg soon and it's only superficial, then there are options to repair the wound either naturally or with reconstructive surgery, which will obviously mean a very long recovery period, but if the damage is deeper and doesn't stop soon then they will not be able to save his leg. He goes back on Friday but it's going to take a couple of weeks before we have a clearer picture. He looked even sadder today when he got out. I swear he knows what's happening.

We will of course try to stay positive, but realistically we have to accept that is now much worse than we had feared and really need to prepare ourselves for the fact that he may very well lose his leg. It's going to be long couple of weeks waiting to see what happens. I feel physically sick at the moment just thinking about it.

Will keep you up to date when we know more. Thanks again for all your concern, we all apreciate it.
