Alex is in the dog club

MSP Alex Neil appeared as a guest at Cumbernauld Dog Training Club recently to allay concerns regarding his proposed changes to the law on dogs.

The SNP politician wants to introduce Control Orders – so-called "doggy ASBOs" which would be issued to irresponsible dog owners. He also hopes that dog attacks on private property will become a criminal offence.

Mr Neil visited Cumbernauld Dog Training Club where he was greeted by around 80 dog owners looking for reassurance that his laws would not unfairly punish responsible dog owners.

Dog trainer John Thomson said: "The meeting was undoubtedly a success with Alex allaying many of our fears regarding his proposed legislation.

"He started by explaining the law as it stands then outlined his proposals. This took 15 minutes.

"He then spent over an hour answering various questions from the 80 or so Cumbernauld Dog Training School members who attended the meeting in Westfield Community Hall. He answered all questions clearly and concisely and avoided answering none.

"We were broadly impressed by his knowledge on the subject of dogs, despite him having a mild phobia which goes back to the time he was bitten by a dog as a child.

"As a group Cumbernauld Dog School generally believe that the new legislation with be a good thing, although we will reserve full judgement on this until the full draft is published late this Autumn, this is when specific definitions will be added to the Bill. The legislation seeks to take the Dangerous Dog Act away from being breed specific and towards 'deed not breed'. It is designed to protect 'responsible ' dog owners like our members and make it easier to punish 'irresponsible owners'.

"This can only be a good thing."

The meeting in Cumbernauld came just at the end of the consultation phase of Mr Neil's Bill. He says that overall voter feedback has been encouraging.

"I am obviously very pleased that there is so much support for my proposed Bill. There are a few technicalities that people have helpfully brought to our attention, and some suggestions for minor improvements, but overall, the reaction to my proposals has been very positive," said Mr Neil.

"The current dog legislation – most notably the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act – has not made the public any safer from dangerous dogs. It focuses on a few specific breeds, and leaves owners of other breeds largely to do as they please. It was also baffling that they chose not to make attacks on private property a criminal offence.

"My approach aims to shift focus from the dogs onto the owners, as they should always be responsible for ensuring their dog does not endanger public safety. There is a minority of dog owners out there who are simply not responsible with their dogs, and we need ways to act against them."

"This is obviously a very encouraging response, and if all goes well, we will hopefully see a change in the law by the end of next year."

I already have..........sloppy journalism........The majority of the article is exactly as per the email that I sent them ( along with photos).........they did contact Alex Neil to get his side of it.

But all in it is good press although it is a bit anoying when others who were not involved also get good press out of our hard work............not the end of the world though as it gave me the chance to tell them about Ben Lomond and out forth coming petition!
