Our breeder called last night to say there was a 5 month old pointer dog desperately needing a home and were we interested.

His first owners turfed him because the wife became jealous of the puppy, and threatened to leave if the puppy didn't. His second owners had a baby and a toddler and couldn't cope with him even though they were adamant they could.

He's off to a friend of our breeder who has 4 GSPs for assessment ie to check there is nothing wrong with him other than being irresponsibly sold and cared for. Man if they couldn't cope with him at 5 months...GSPs don't get into their stride until at least 8 months.

We've said we're interested in principle, as long as all he needs is a bit of training and loving but haven't made a decision.

wait and see.

sounds as if the previous owners shouldn't be dog owners!............hope it works out for you suzanne!...........i'm sure otto would benefit from doggy companionship!

Poor soul and if he has any problems you can bet they arent of his own making, with owners like that Evil or Very Mad

how the heck can you get jealous of a dog, unless your marriage is dodgy to start with Rolling Eyes

I don't know too much about him so will reserve judgment as it has to be right for us and especially for Otto. The couple who have him might fall in love with him, but as they have 4, I think they're just holding him for now.

I think Otto would benefit from another dog, and the teenager is unlikely to be employed any time soon while he awaits football stardom.

If you want some private time - don't get a pointer. They don't do aloof. And if you have a baby, you don't have time to train an energetic puppy. Poor boy.

I was thinking about his first owners trying to have a cuddle and this wet nose shoving its way in between.

Even now, Otto tries to pull my socks off if I cuddle Ian - I don't know if he's defending my honour or loves Ian a bit too much, or if he just thinks all cuddles should be for him.

He gets short shrift though...not behaviour to be encouraged. But how mad would you have to be to resent that...and demand the dog be cast out.

It's not agreed yet though...see what happens.

Poor pup!
Saw a woman yesterday walking 2 GSPs together, they looked lovely trotting along beside her. Otto would probably love a playmate...double trouble! I'm sure you and Ian could whip another one into shape...let us know how you get on

Tom does miss playing with his friend and we were thinking of getting a other not sure what to do as he loves it when we have Andrew parents dogs ! But then we have would it be too much for him !!!

Found out a bit more about him - he's skin and bone and at 5 months has been taught nothing. Doesn't even know how to walk on the lead.

He's back with the couple who own his dad, and they are trying to get some basics into him as well as some food. He behaves like an 8 week old puppy.

I'll give them a bell at the weekend and we might get to have a look at him the following Saturday. Will depend on what they say or they might even keep him or have someone more local to them.

I was worried that he would need more time than I can give him, but it will be no different to the age we got Otto and we managed that. They are smart dogs and pick things up quickly, as Cesar says, dogs live in the now.
