thanks guys.
when i let him out, i dont encourage him back in - its probably a bad habit on my behalf, but 9 times out of 10 i leave him to it and then he lets me know when he wants back in. Confused
if hes out there for seconds then its obvious that he's not had enough time to do it, i'll keep him outside.

As already suggested above, as of yesterday ive went back to basic by 'cheering' when i see him pee in the garden. we done this before, but didnt continue it.

He seems to like the attention, so hopefully it will be black and white in his mind that if he does his biz outside he'll get a cheer and clap when he comes in; and a shouting at when he makes a mess inside.

he's an intelligent wee mutt - its just frustrating that he cant get to grips with this!! Crying or Very sad

I'll keep you all posted with progress...
... consider this the PEE/POO Blog

Be afraid...be very afraid!! Laughing

You could have Hek for a bit.. he'll be so busy avoiding his huge feet that all thought of doing anything inside will leave him!

Ross, try not letting him out of the crate until after you have cleaned your teeth... Then you can be there and supervise him and give loads of praise when he does his business outside. Bitter apple spray will make him reluctant to re-use a certain place. Close supervision is necessary as you must see him in order to alter the behaviour.

With Great Danes it is absolutely necessary to ensure they do not do the toilet inside. When house training I actually time them to see when they need to go after they have eaten and watch to be able to praise them to the hilt. It can help to encourage them to use a particular area.

My problem is Poppy has fixated on the area I trained her to use in our back garden so much so that she doesn't want to go anywhere else. She has crossed her legs for a very long time and then runs out the dog flap to the Buddha garden as soon as she arrives home.
Good luck.

Tie an elastic band round his bits when he is inside Very Happy Only joking!! Make sure he is outside long enough to get all his pee/poo out and and really tell him off when he does it indoors, same as what everyone else is saying.

bit of a belated reply to this, but we are now about 5 or 6 weeks without incident.
he now seems to have grown out of it or learned that when he really needs out he can cry at the back door.

id say the turning point was actually watching Cuthbert when we were looking after him. Giles seems to watch what other dogs do quite alot. Cubs went to the back door until we let him out - he went straight out for a pee and back in again - Giles followed him and done it on the same tree directly after him! Smile

anyway...

where was I...?

Nice to hear our beautiful Cubs has some good habits - just don't allow Giles to watch what he does with a mobile phone, remote control, slippers etc etc Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

All joking aside it's brilliant news - all Giles needed all along was a big bruvva to show him how it's done! Wink
