I have my two shepherds with direct line and it costs £30 per month but I have made two claims in the last year and dodge has gone under for a bad cut to be stitched.

My dogs are 4 and 5 and my policy has gone up this year, probably because of the claims. I have an £80 excess but they pay directly which not all insurance co's do. I just hand the forms into the vet and they bill the insurers.

would recommend it ok.

As your dog gets older Kirsty the rates go up and you're right, claims experience can also affect the rating of a policy. Also most policies have an age limit whereby they won't Insure the dog at all because of the increased risk of injuries/diseases. Staffies, when I Insured my Mitzi with More Than, were not Insurable after 8 years of age. They overlooked the age limit however and "forgot" to remove her from the policy, the clause was hidden deep in the policy wording so we hadn't even noticed it. When they realised their error they removed her without prior notice and curtly advised us IF we had made a claim during the period she was on cover, when she shouldn't have been (and for which we paid) they would NOT have honoured the claim Evil or Very Mad

Also some Insurers won't Insure Mongrel dogs or those without pedigree papers proving their monetary value - pays to play close attention to the T&C Wink

Direct line claim they insure for life and they have so far for all of mine. 12 years old were the oldest. They even advised me that I should have claimed for arthritis medication which I hadn't claimed for my old Beagle. They suggested I sent in retrospective vet bills.
Apparently some companies do not want to insure rescues.

Good news there then Lorna. I'm on the lookout myself for decent cover but was trying to narrow the companies down that I was looking at first before trawling through all the policy wordings to check the T & C's Smile

We have insured the pups with PetPlan lifetime insurance - expensive but it was recommended by so many friends.

I know from experience (my cat) how important insurance is.. he fell out a tree (he was a bit stupid) landed on a branch and impaled himself in the eye socket.. all of this on a bank holiday.

It eventually cost over £1000 with the operation and the aftercare, but they paid out with no issue.

Kevan (yes that was his name) was as thick a mince but he was brave, sweet and very lucky..

The stick pushed his eye aside and didn't puncture the socket so all the vet had to do was remove it and make sure there were no splinters or infection..

2 weeks later he was good as new with perfect eye-site.

He was more like a dog than a cat - he would jump into the shower with me and play in the water - he loved to play fetch and would fall off high surfaces like the back of the couch.

But in all the years I had him he NEVER ONCE bared a claw to a human. I miss him loads.

Many years ago (well before I met my Mark) I had a kinda boyfriend called Kevan - we were more affectionate mates than anything else really.

Anyway I digress - YOUR Kevan sound like he was a real sweetheart!!! My smellycat had rubbish balance too, used to fall asleep on the arms of chairs then fall OFF Rolling Eyes landing on her head more often than not.

Kev sure was a lucky lad keeping his eye! - You got any pictures of him to share? Smile
