Puppy Emergency Visit

Hi there,

I was looking for some advice.

On Saturday night, Jake (our 16 week old springer puppy) suddenly became extremely distressed.. He turned in circles, kicking out his back legs and thrashed when we picked him up.. At first we thought it was something on his paw but after many scratches we couldn't see anything.. We put him in his crate to see if he would calm but he either ran in circles or lay on his side and thrashed his back legs.

Of course we whisked him off to the emergency vet (who was lovely) she couldn't find anything physical wrong with him except tenderness in his stomach, she suspected Colic, because he was so distressed she gave him a pain killer and told us to watch him.

He slept through the night and by the next day he was fine, but I'm not sure what we should do if it happens again?

If he were a child I would give him gripe water or something like that, is there anything you can do for a puppy?

What a worry..

I agree - I think gripe water would be fine and also perhaps Milk of Magnesia?

this maybe a stupid question but was he near any stingy nettles when out walking ??

when tina was about 18 weeks we had her out playing one day.......when we brought her in to the house she started yelping, crying and thrashing about as if she was in alot of pain and had colic or something...........we checked her over and we couldnt see anything so thought maybe she had swallowed something..........so we got her straight to the vets and they couldnt see anything either......then after all the questions and good check at her we relized that she had just stood on stingy nettles Shocked

and because she was only a pup she couldnt deal with the pain

it cost me £80 coz it was a sunday on a holiday weekend Twisted Evil

so hope little jake is ok x

Add calamine lotion to your emergency first aid kit then as that's safe to apply and eases the pain of stinging nettles no end - trust me - been there with all 3 Laughing

Mine's kept in the fridge to maximise the benefit whenever it may be needed Wink

Hi there,

Sorry I never got back about his progress.

He was perfectly fine the next day and so far has no re-occurrence of the issue..

However over the weekend his eye's began to close and he looked so sorry for himself, we thought it was probably hayfever as we had had them running around the undergrowth.. but just to be sure we took him to the vet, lucky we did.. the wee soul had a high temp, swollen glands and really sore eyes, she gave him some antibiotics and some eye drops and he's looking better now..

Last night he started limping but this morning he's fine..

I think we are going to have our hands full with our wee boy..

Do you think it's normal for puppy's to catch lots of things when they are young? (like tots going to nursery for the first time)

Yep I do hunny. Some dogs immune systems aren't as strong as others for whatever reason and this will always show itself in puppyhood - let's just hope he gets it all out of the way whilst he's young and grows into a big bouncy happy healthy adult Wink

Asilone is used to calm dog's stomach or to stop bloat. It is available from chemist in large blue bottle for a couple of pounds. One spoonful poured down the throat will work. I always have some as part of the dog first aid kit.
