OK Star is great in every way ...............not that I am bias Embarassed but he won't fetch, he will if Libby goes for it but that's more to take it off her and hide it! If Star is by himself he just looks at you as if to say yeah right you through it go and get it yourself!!!!! He doesn't even chase it.

So basically does anyone have any ideas on how to encourage him to do it?

Dale wasn't keen at first but he'd follow something on a string if you pulled it across the floor and then he began to chase. Getting it back took longer.

Basically I threw a toy , let him chase it and then called him back With luck the toy came too. It can help if you wind him up with the toy first so he really wants to go after it.

Now Dale wants to bring it fairly close to me,drop it ,and run off Then he lies down a few feet away and eyes it. I'm still struggling to get him to come and sit in front of me and drop it on command.

I think there probably is something in the breed. It was the fastest thing that Otto learned, but that's what he was bred to do.

I use fetch to wear him out a bit and he's not always in the mood, but I can get him interested.

He'll play fetch with a ball more than he will with a chew toy cos he's associated the word ball with that game.

And bounce the ball about a lot, hit it off the wall, throw it between you, he soon decides he wants to play. And if he's not bringing it back, I just walk towards the house and he soon brings it back otherwise the game is over.

And act very stupidly as that makes him thinking bringing it back is fun.

I could never get the old family dog to do it either.

She'd go and get it but NEVER brought it back once in 17 years. The lab bit was obviously not as dominant as the GSD bit.

I think she just couldn't be bothered to bring it back Laughing

Murphy will play fetch all day long .............. it's his favourite pass time!!!! But Diesel wants you to throw something for him but he's not so keen to bring it back.
Murphy is the first GSD we have had that has fetched like this. He will drop it into the palm of your hand when you ask him to. Very Happy

See I would understand if Star ran to it and just didn't want to bring it back but he just doesn't even care he just looks at you like "what you do that for? Oh and now you want me to bring it back?!?! Yeah right! Laughing

Buster picks up the ball and runs as far away as possible with a look that says you threw it away it's mine now and you are not getting it back!

Pixel just did it, we never taught her really, but mostly she just drops it before she gets to you, other than when she is excited and she just runs about like at the dogs dinner day Laughing
