We were up in our caravan in Fife right on the coast throughout the worst of the weather. It was truly scary! Very high tides ( the highest in many years) combined with 80 mile an hour winds, very heavy rain and spring tides made this a memorable time and not one I fancy repeating either. We were lucky as our caravan is slightly more sheltered (by a couple of yards ) from the complete exposure to the front but I spent an anxious 48 hours watching the tide and worrying about the effect of the wind.
At one point the tide was only a few yards away with very very high waves and that was filling up a burn with steep sides, when everything died down the coastal path a few yards away along the front of neighbouring vans and chalets was severely eroded with large chunks of ground missing and whereas prior to the storm the coastline there was fairly straight, now it is like a giant has come along and eaten large chunks of it, One chalet has had the ground behind it so badly damaged their garden fence is now the coast and the raining ground under the fence looks none too safe either. A number of vans are now several yards closer to the edge (thankfully not a cliff edge but even so!) and getting closer with each storm and year.
While our park has suffer significant damage, nobody was hurt and other areas came off much worse. The park owners are trying to (responsibility the pun) shore up the coastline as it affects the park, with shingle from the beach. I suppose it's better than nothing , while they fight with the council as to whose responsilbility it is!
Hard to believe the devastation caused by weather when you look outside today.
