And I suppose liek people some are affected different. None of ours are vaccinated against it, 2 of them have had it, Scooby and Moya and Pixel and Misty didnt, they are in the same area, though Pixel goes to classes and so did Moya at the time, Misty and Scooby were old yet it was Scooby who got it and Misty didnt, there is no rhyme or reason to it at all Rolling Eyes

there are countless strains of kennel cough unfortunately, and you are right, no one vaccine covers them all. some arent covered at all if i remember correctly. a bit like our flu, vaccines cover the most common, but it mutates all the time the wee oh I swore!

Me and Izzy were having a chat about dog viruses, as you do, and apparently the jump between canine and human host compatible flu has only recently been found.. because as Suzanne says, viruses mutate. Of course, we also have the annual winter flu epidemic to look forward to. Crying or Very sad

Wasn't just a furball? I wouldn't worry if he is fine now.

No, Stuart.

his nose would go dry and then wet he was sneezing all the time and would cough but it was as though he was choking i checked to make sure there was nothing there as thats what i thought it would be.

I gave him some hot water for a couple of days, in case it was a sore throat!! half paracetamol one day and a few days later gave him calpaul (sp) for babies and he seems back to normal!!!

mum - its both. they get all the symptoms, runny eyes & nose, sneezing, , but get very very ill on it.it kills many cats each year mostly kittens, horrible disease.

if a dog is fine otherwise, try to let it run its course, by going to the vets you can end up infecting other dogs, and in general not much can be done. if however, they become ill on it, dehydrated etc then yeah definetely go to vets. keep them rested for a few days and NO contact with other dogs, its highly contagious.

no difference to how we treat a human cold really is it! Letting it run it's course and being sensible by not infecting others (as far as possible!)
Common sense I suppose.

i know we haven't been on here for a while, but i thought it was quite interesting to see this post today...
We just got back from the vet and Leo and Shadow have been diagnosed with kennel cough today. they haven't been anywhere except home, and as you know they haven't been at classes for a couple of weeks, but we thought we'd better let you know! Regarding zoonosis/zoomosis [i know conflicting spellings exist] there is only one type of kennel cough that can zoomose , a bacterial one known as bordetella, can zoomose and it's usually between dogs and guinea pigs as opposed to humans. [although funnily enough, me and mum have also been down with the cold and coughs this week!] we've been told not to go to classes for a week or two more just in case. I cross posted between two threads just to let everyone know. the gruesome twosome don't seem to mind right enough, leo is currently sprawled on the floor and shadow is hovering about the sofa.

we had a cat called Ted who had cat flue when he was a kitten, he got better but it damaged his lungs, will have to check how old he was when he died. but i think he was younger than he should have been.

yeah dogs dont get the same cold as we do. the kennel cough is badly named, you dont have to have been anywhere near kennels for your dog to get it, the name simply refers to how contagious it is and the fact it is more common in areas with large numbers of dogs. dogs can pick it up in the street if near a dog already suffering from it, so thats why its important to keep your dog isolated for a few days during and after infection.
