Next time you want to give your dog a treat give it a bone
Forget buying overpriced rawhide chews.........stop in at you local butcher and ask for some bones for the dog......if you buy your family food from them they will usually give you them for free!
There are two main types of bone you can give your dog.
light bones, like rib bones.......your dog will actually crush and digest everything, start with small ones if your dog is not used to getting these.
Recreational load bearing bones like marrow bones, these are much harder bone that cannot be digested but your dog will love trying to get the marrow from the centre and scraping every last bit of meat from the surface......a great way to keep their teeth clean and the dogs jaw and neck muscles strong.
Don't leave recreational bones with them too long...they do get dirty.
If you have more than one dog a bone is one of the most likely triggers for aggression.........keep an eye on them!
Here are my two enjoying marrow bones this afternoon

Dora and Lizzy love a marrow bone it keeps them quiet and content for ages then I have to scoop all the marrow they can't reach out for them. It has caused a few scraps usually Lizzy starting it. |

Wow nice dogs John & don't they look happy
I remember this funny story about a Border collie on a farm I deliver pet food to.
It was during the BSE scare when butchers weren't allowed to give bones to dogs anymore.
Now this poor dog would wander down to the butchers once a week, on the same day of the week and he'd get a free bone.
Poor little thing - he just didn't understand why this free bone routine had to stop
I must admit the only dog fight we've ever had between Blue & Sadie was over a bone . I had to break that one up with a chair LOL
They don't have bones anymore as I'm far too little to break up a dog fight between them.
What is it with dogs - they always want what the other dog has got!!! _________________ Gwen.

Yeah, but he spent most of the time trying to get off his lead looking for somewhere to bury it. |
