I've been building them for 16 years now.
My how things have changed over the years, the technology has moved tremendously in that time.
It's so easy to do, the only tool you need is a philips screwdriver and if you want to take the plunge here's a link to the supplier I go to, their component prices are very good, they're located in Alloa which is not too far from Cumbernauld.

I built my latest system last summer, here's the spec -
Asus M2N-E SLI motherboard,
AMD 6400 dual core processor,
4 gig of Ram,
256 meg Graphics card,
1 x IDE hard disc,
2 x Sata hard discs,
1 x external hard disc,
1 x DVD Rom,
1 x DVD writer, dual layer,
1 x tower case.
Total cost, around £500.
The Sata discs are three times the speed of the IDE ones.
Have a go at it, you'll save a fortune and you'll know you've done it all yourself. _________________ You only live once, so get it right the first time |

I used to build my own........but economies of scale seems to have brought down the cost of already built systems..........especially when you take the OS into account..........Ebay is always a source of cheap pc's as is e-buyer but the latest flyer I got from Dell had some amazing prices........laptops from £179 +vat
I agree that you do get a sense of atisfaction when you build your own _________________ John Thomson

I agree John, you do get a good deal nowadays, the package offers are really good, however, you get what they want to give you as they're off a prodution line, Dell will accomodate you as to your own spec but you have to pay more.
This is why I build my own, I can choose the best components and also customise my system to suit me. _________________ You only live once, so get it right the first time |

Yep I do, I shoot my pics in raw format, each individual pic can take up 60 meg of disc space.
I'm just waiting on a cheeky reply from Barry because I shoot in raw. _________________ You only live once, so get it right the first time |
