generally when we go out without Giles, we crate him in the livingroom, but when we step outside the front door when he's not in his crate (eg to put bins out of get something from the car) he goes ballistic and barks the house down until you go back in.

Ali said this morning when i left for work, he was going loopy.

How can we stop this?

If he is still barking and you go back in he is learning that barking brings you back........if he is calm in the crate why not use it?

I'd be inclined to agree with John Ross. This seems to be separation anxiety/demand/attention seeking barking. He knows that when out of his crate it's a temporary separation so is barking to demand you come back. Only thing you can do is either crate him OR leave him with the person who is remaining in the house and that person should very firmly tell him to SHUT UP!!!! Very Happy My girls whine sometimes if one of us leaves the house - both Mark and I just tell them to shut up and don't tolerate continued whining - they have learned to stop very quickly - Giles will too if you are united in your approach and consistent. Wink

Enzo does this more with me as he has a routine that i will get dressed for work in the morning along with my two eldest girl's, i then take him a walk and give him his breakfast and put him back into his crate but when i lift my one year from the high chair he will just bark and whine and i can still hear this when i leave the house Shocked , when he was at the vet on Monday Craig was holding him on leash and i was standing next to him but my legs started to get sore so sat in a seat about 2ft awat and he whined until i stood next to him again, he also follows me to the toilet Rolling Eyes

Oh yeah - that Enzo's a right big tough guy isn't he? Rolling Eyes Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I know it must do your head in and I know it would be lovely if he didn't whinge and whine (which WILL stop if you're firm with him Wink ) BUT - how beautiful that he has developed such a strong bond with you after his iffy start. Smile
