Hi All,

My Schnauzer Ralph is generally well behaved with my wife and I. He will sit on command and comes when we call him (most times). The problem is when he catches sight of a stranger or other dog he can become aggressive. He will bark at people, normally if the person talks to him he will pipe down. On occasion he will hide away from people when they approach him.

If you have any advice or experience of this behavior please let me know.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Rob

Socialization will help - come on our walks - he will become used to a lot of people and a lot of other dogs and this should help

Hi Rob,

be careful not to try and sooth him when he does this.........as this would in his eyes encourage it.
Have you tried a leash correction? Or re-directing his attention with a treat or toy?

Have a look at the like to pack order on the home page and see if any of that applies........he may not see you as the pack leader and therefore thinks that it is his job to protect you.

Has he ever bit or is it all noise?

I agree with Kirsty that scocialisation and walks with other dogs would help Smile

MY TWO CAN BE GUILTY OF THIS TOO!

LIKE JOHN AND KIRSTY SAYS SOCIALIZING AND RE DIRECTING THEM WITH SOMETHING ELSE! DEFINITELY DON'T TELL HIM IT'S ALRIGHT AS IT'S NOT!

YOU'LL GET THERE TAKES TIME AND PRACTICE! Smile

THE WALKS DO HELP! MY DOGS LOVE TO BARK AND CHASE AFTER CYCLISTS AND NOW THEY DO IT ON VERY VERY RARE OCCASIONS!

Hi All,

Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to the group walks, hopefully that will help.

John, I will have a look at the links. He has never bitten anyone its more snorting and barking followed by running away. When he is on the lead I do correct him without much success, diverting his attention with a toy normally works best.
