I have now got 2 crates!!!yeah!!!

but i am unsure about what to do tonight. the girls normally sleep at the bottom of the stairs i move their beds there at night.
At the moment they are both curled up asleep in their crates...do i just close the door and hope they will be ok? or gradually introduce the crate at night....silly questions i know but have never used crates before.

if they behave during the night i.e. don't run about or eat anything they shouldn't Laughing then you could try leaving their beds in the crates and leaving the doors open.
I know many people will leave their dogs closed in their crates at night and it's not a problem ata ll. Whatever suits you Emma.

Purely from a chewing aspect i was going to shut the door as The crates are in the dining room and lady chews when she gets stressed( I am thinking sleeping somewhere different might stress her but she is flat out lol!) i am sure they will let me know if they don't like it. ....WISH ME LUCK Confused

Emma, I am shutting Poppy in at night just now. She will be clean and safe in there. John will be up and get her out with the other two at 6am.
Your girls will be fine.

emma i have always closed the crate door at night! it is only during the day that i would leave it open for them to come and go of their own accord!

now the only time they go into theirs is if i am off out and their is no one in the house for them and i leasve the radio on so as there is always a voice in the background!

I have never needed to use a crate, I must be doing something correct. I have had 4 dogs and i have had no problems with any of them destroying or pee or poo in my house. The secret is catching them in the act.

These are dogs six and seven, Brenda and i had never used a crate before, it was only when they were separated when Skye went to the vets that Lady chewed through a radiator pipe. I was dubious about getting crates i must admit but the girls love them!

No dogs on the sofa. Happy days Very Happy

Brenda, older rescue dogs, especially if they have been badly damaged, often need a safe space to which they can retreat. Crates are ideal for this.

Brenda,
lots of people use crate not because they have a problem to fix but because dogs are pack animals who live in dens......the crate gives a feeling of security.

It's hard to catch a puppy/young dog in the act in the middle of the night or while you're not in the house as well. Closing the door, keeps them out of harm's way and allows you to correct when they're out of it.

We've always closed the door when we're not there to supervise. Other times it's left open and he goes in of his own accord if I'm cooking or we're eating.
