hello there, another newbie joining your club Very Happy really looking forward to all the help and advice i can get in the future, we have just got our new puppy, a 9 week old Siberian Husky called Koda. i`m sure he is going to be a handful so we cant wait to start training him. we have bought a crate for him, and currently training him with it, he still cries a little but will go to sleep in it, but as soon as we leave the room the cries start again, has anyone got any advice on how to learning him to be on his own?

one other question for the moment, i know he is still very young, but he does like to bite and nip alot when he is playing, he is not aggressive but i know we have to stop this when he is a puppy so he wont do damage when he is an adult, we have all the books but just wondering if anyone can give me advice on how to deter him from this behavior?

thank you and will hopefully see some of you when you reopen in august.

Kerry

Hi! Welcome to the forum.

Re the biting, Star used to do this all the time and when he is pushing his luck he still tries it. All I can suggest is that as soon as he does it a sharp NO is said and you stop playing with him straight away, then maybe 5 Min's later start playing again. Just repeat this until he gets the message. He will miss the play more than the biting! Star got the message really quickly!

Hello and welcome

I'm sure you'll find lots of help here. I know I have. Dale did a lot of biting as a puppy. He was still doing it when he had a full set of teeth! But it has stopped at last. Laughing
We kept saying no, squealing, offering things he could chew and putting him in his crate to calm down when it all got too much.
I'm looking forward to meeting your pup. Let's see some pics.

Hi to you both and welcome to the forum.....lots of good advice on here for you.

Is this your first dog? Crate training is well worth while.........make it positive.throw a treat into the crate to get your dog used to 'nice things' happen when I go into the crate.

Nipping is natural but something to stamp out as quickly as possible.
Nipping is how litter mates play and establish who is the most dominant.

As soon as your pup tries to bite immediately stop interacting with it.......say 'ouch' in a loud voice and simply walk away and ignore the dog.......it will quickly learn if it bites then the game stops.

It is well worth looking at the Basic Pack Order section on the site which sets out the ground rules of how to establish yourself as the dogs natural leader.

yes this is our first dog together but have both grown up with dogs in our family, but this is def the first husky we have had. Did lots of research on the breed, bought most of the books Very Happy

yeah we got told of most husky owners to use the crate with him, and he seems to take to it quite well.
i read over your section you mentioned, thanks it will be very helpful especially with a husky

I`ll try get some pics up soon, well as soon as i work out how to Very Happy

we were told that Takoda means everyones friend in Sioux, but we liked Koda on its own, think it means friend. Seeing how everyone tells us that a husky is a hopless guard dog and wants to be everyones friend we thought it was a great name for him.
