Hi

I know I`ve read this somewhere but I can`t find it anywhere. What does it mean if a dog is gobbling grass instead of their dinner.

Lynn, it can be a sign of an upset stomach..

when Leon has a sore stomach and when he had the GI problems he would cry at the door to get out and when i let him out, he would go over the the grassy areas of the garden and try and chomp mouth-fulls of it.

I'm not sure if it eases discomfort or induces vomiting, nor am I entirely sure if they should be allowed to do it or whether or not it is counter-productive.

It just seems to be an instinctive thing.

i agree with both barry and linsey, i always was led to believe is was an instinctive thing with dogs when they felt unwell or deficient in something!..............all of my dogs have done it as some point, vomiting at a later date! can't say it did any of them any harm!

Jaws eats grass when he has an upset tummy. He usually does it after he ate something he wasn't supposed to. Cheeky little oh I swore... Laughing

Otto does it when he has a dicky tummy...scours round the edges of the garden for long bits. Doesn't do them any harm from what I've read.

Agree with all the above, all my dogs have done this in the past, usually when they have the squits. A word of warning though, try not to let them eat the grass from the edges of public areas that have been sprayed with weedkiller; the local councils start this about springtime and continue throughout the summer.

Mishka always does this just before she is sick.

We always know she has an iffy tummy when she does this. But like Steven says, just make sure there isn't any weedkiller etc on grass.

It can be both. Often dogs do eat grass if they have an upset stomach but sometimes dogs just like to eat grass anyway. I've seen both and it doesn't do any harm except obviously beware of councils out spraying from here on in.

This was always my understanding of grass eating...to make themselves sick.

I always thought is was to make them sick or ease constipation. in saying that my dogs just seem to like it esply buddy. sometimes it is like walking sheep not a dog he spends so much time grazing. he has no problems with his digestion-wind or smell etc.

Usually to make themselves sick, but my lot eat grass anyway, normally, just eat more of it if they feel the need to be sick.
I think its they way the running dogs digestion works, their metabolism is so much fast than normal.

Scooby and Misty eat grass after their dinner every day so i know whats normal for them and whats not
