When it comes to feeding you dogs hygiene is paramount.
Stainless steel food bowls are a must......cleaned after every meal.
Water bowls can be stainless steel or heavy ceramic, cleaned daily and always a supply of fresh water.
Golden rule should always be ...........if you wouldn't eat/drink from it yourself then it needs cleaned!

Hi John
I use a "Dog it" water fountain. All animals prefer to drink from a moving water supply such as a stream. The fountain uses filters to clean the water and then the water flows down a clear dome and also has a small bowl attached.
The plus point is of course that the water is always on the move therefore fresh and the filters always make sure the water is clean!
I swear by it!

Hi,
.........where did you get it? Do they have a web site? Will my two turn the kitchen into a swimming pool with it?

Hi John
If you just type it in to a search engine you should find it no probs, I got mine from ebay. Though I think you might need a bigger one. There are loads of different types "Dog it" is just the make I bought. They range from about £20 to £60 depending on the size you go for.
I have a mat that mine sits on so any little spills just fall on to that. The dogs love it though.
Have a look on ebay and see what they have but all work on the same principle of having the water on the move and passed through filters. After you buy the fountain all you have to do is replace the filter every two weeks or so.
Let me know how you get on! |

John googled it after he read your post and found a couple of websites. But he didn't try Ebay..... I'll give it a look. I think it's a great idea.

Hi John,
Pets at home have the water fountains. So does the pet shop in Muirhead.
If Mishka is anything to go by, and not really being a chewer. Your answer is a NO for Diesel and Murphy. They are quite delicate I think and remember they are connected to the mains electricity.

because Gyps and Inca have very fluffy faces the dribble everywhere. then we found Thea's giant hamster bottles (at i think it was the pound shop) which are fab. it gives them all the water they want with no mess.
you need to get your own bottle but you get everything else

Tried that one with Mishka.
She trashed it after a few days!
Dogs with wool and especially white coats are better using stainless steel bowls too according to the breeder we got Moli from (she is a Bichon frise).
Whether its true or not I don't know. |

all i know is that our dogs love it. i guess it just depends on the dog, although i think my two would go daft about the hose too.

That looks a great idea Kendal, I never thought of them. I always liked those dog it things too, Ive seen them on ebay and I like the idea of the fresh running water.
Just stainless steel here too, though all our animal dishes are, ferrets, chickens etc too |

I usually stick my dogs dishes in the dishwasher at least once a week and clean them in the sink after each meal, think I'll just stick to my big ceramic water bowl and cahnge it a few times through the day. |

agree with John we have stainless steel for ours washed every time, water changed constantly all day, if my two see running water , from a hose pipe or the sky they hide, with the constant rain we have been having su and oz have mastered the art of keeping very still and quiet, and they are experts at crossing their legs
I also feed them outside on an elevated food station as large breeds should not eat from floor level, but I'm sure you all knew that.
Sorry can't remember who said they were recommended by a bishon frize (sorry spelling) breeder to always have stainless steel, my sister in law has one, she won't go near stainless steel she doesn't like to see her reflection

I've heard the elevated food stations are a benefit to bigger breeds. We've spoke about getting them but since we switched our two to raw they lift food and take it out into the garden to chew!!!! |

You do all this, an then they go an drink from the worst black stagnant water that you ever did see, or you have to retrieve the puterid carcass of a rotting hedgehog from their throats before they swallow it whole . You gotta love them eh!
