what would you do in this situation?

ARRRGGHHH!

Situation:
Giles off lead in wide open area. Other owner and dog in far distance. Giles spots said dog (3 times size of him by the way). Giles tears straight towards dog wagging tail and wanting to play. Im shouting on him to come. Other dog not really interested in him, but if you know Giles - he's a serial friend-maker and is persistant! Other Dog chasing a ball that owner keeps throwing - still showing no interest - Giles chasing Dog as fast as his wee legs can take him (not ball).
Owners sees that i cant get his attention for him to come back so I start walking towards them (about 100m away from me at this point).

At this point owner attaches leash to their dog and starts walking quick pace away from me. Giles walking with his new adopted friends ignoring me shouting on him... Rolling Eyes

Owner still walking away from me - I am almost jogging to catch up. Evil or Very Mad

I get within 20-30 metres away from them and call once more - Giles responds and comes straight towards me

If you were the owner of the other dog, what would you do? Idea

Ok, i wouldnt mind so much if Giles was a snarling, aggressive bag of teeth and the owner was protecting their dog, but all he wanted to do was go up and sniff and befriend other doggy! Smile

Personally I would probably lead the puppy back towards its owner........

Ross i have been in that situation alot as dogs seem to be drawn to Inca, i either sty still till the dog loses attention or owner comes to get it, or i try to sent the dog away back to its owner, or walk back two the owner. its what i would want someone to do for me.

Remembering that I have Staffies who are not hugely good with ANY dog running at them - be it with evil or good intent I would immediately put my dogs back on the leash (assuming they were off them), hand the leashes to Mark (as I NEVER walk them alone unless I take just one) I would then go say hi to the pup, pick it up or walk it back to it's owner. Once with it's owner I would explain the ONLY reason I was returning the pup would be to keep it safe Wink

If I was alone with just one of my dogs I'd allow the introduction IF I could see my dog was receptive - if not Id keep myself between the pup and my dog to give it's owner chance to come and reclaim it. I KNOW 100% my dogs and would be able to prevent any pup or person getting bitten. I've done exactly this thing before so I know it works but adult dogs are a whole different ball game I'm afraid - I HAVE had experience of an aggressive adult dog come pounding over to us - leashes were IMMEDIATELY put back on mine, passed to Mark and I got between my lot and the approaching aggressive dog (not really something I'd recommend but I'M our pack leader and no way was a bully like that getting through me! Embarassed

) I shooed the dog off then gave the owner the rollicking of their life - they freely admitted to me they KNEW their dog had a problem and couldn't control it! To which I replied - "Well keep the damned thing on a leash until you can!" Evil or Very Mad

What got to me the most was NOT the fact that the dog was out of control but the fact that the owners KNEW it and did nothing about it, in fact encouraged the behaviour by failing to correct it, keep the dog under control on a leash or even TRY basic training!!!

It's a HUGE pet hate of mine, people not having control of their dogs or consideration for others. I KNOW what mine could potentially be capable of and I NEVER want to see that side of them and it bugs the life out of me that people have such little concern for their OWN dogs that they would allow them to run riot! Evil or Very Mad

Having met Giles I would run as fast as I could in the other direction, vicious just isn't the word!!!! Very Happy

The owner should have stopped or walked in your direction, that's what I would have done, mean b$gger!!!

have done from time to time, would never, ever just walk away with the other dog following me while said owner trying to entice it back

with adult dogs I always stop and wait till owners have put their dog back on leash before I move again. If it was just a little pup I would have walked back towards owner so the pup would be going back in right direction.

Maybe it was you who is scary Ross!!!

Even if it was Hektor the pup was trying to get to I would have stopped and like Jack, have put myself between pup and Hek until owner had caught up, more for the pups benefit than mine.

Poor wee Giles, he just wants to be everyone's pal!

Ross and Ali came over on Friday night with Giles and all 3 dogs got on great! Hektor is just so clumsy though, he nearly stood on Giles a few times and Giles spend some of the night hiding behind legs! It gives me hope that Hektor DOES like some dogs and wont always be so anti social.. Smile
