Hi I'm Loraine and I've just got my very first dog, Bex is a GSD and is 16 weeks old . I've only had him 2 weeks and all this puppy training is new to me (Hilarious and frustrating at times!!) but i'm doing my best to follow all your tips and advice on the site. Smile
Trying to get him to stop play biting at the moment and to stop splashing in his water bowl, any tips??

Hi Loraine,

i have 3 GSD's 2 adult females Rionnag fondly known as Roonie (black) and Breagha (white) and a new almost 12 week old male puppy called Balach.

when you say water slashing do you mean tipping over the bowl...........if so all my dogs have done this ......they find it great fun. i opt to giving them crushed ice instead .........if i am giving them water i only put in what they need and empty the bowl when they are done.......

the mouthing is just what they do in their pack i just say a firm NO!!! and take away my hand or whatever they are biting that i don't want them to and replace it with one of his toys and when he plays with this i praise him ..................

good luck with the puppy ...........hope we get to meet him soon..... Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Thanks for your advice, I'm never sure how much water to give him?? I make sure there is clean water all the time, should I change this to only when I feed him? He does like ice cubes, they seem to help with his teething & gums Surprised

Hi Loraine

I have a 4 year old GSD called Ben.

Initially he did the old water party trick and had a wee go at mouthing you.

We were advised to get a food and water bowl combined that you can raise up and down to allow for the growth of your puppy. We were told that some GSD's intestines can turn around by bending down to much whilst eating so this twin feeding station assists with the tummy situation and water / feeding issue.

http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_bowls_feeders

On mouthing at my own puppy class we were told to yelp in a higher pitched voice than normal with a firm NO and introduce toys to bite and play. This has worked really well.

What a cracking looking puppy. See everyone another beautiful GSD LaughingLaughing

I wish you and bex great times together.

joe

Welcome to you Loraine - can't wait to see pictures!!! Very Happy

I have 2 Staffie girls (Ella & Rosie) and a little crossed Staffie boy (Sykes) who are the loves of my life Cool . Ella is a REALLY sloppy drinker - scooping up what she wants and walking off with it dribbling all over the floor but none have ever tipped over the water bowl itself - this would be me if they did..... Evil or Very Mad

For teething another good tip is to chop some chunky sticks of carrots and cheese and give him those to gnaw on after they've been in the freezer for a couple of hours - gives him vital vitamins and calcium as well as soothing his gums a tad less harshly than ice which could cause over sensitivity. Also you can pop his rubber toys in a plastic bag (for hygiene) and stick THAT in the freezer for a few hours and give him them to chew on - helps even more PLUS saves your hands and other things he shouldn't be chewing on Wink
