Has anyone any experience of these, I find that my collie cross Fred is a tad easily distracted when out and wondered if this was worth investing in or is it a total waste of money?

Thoughts please,

Cheers.

Ian.

The 'Halti ' style head collars can be effective for some dogs...........I've yet to see a dog that likes wearing one, most try to get them off.

Word of caution Ian. If you are going to go ahead and use this type of collar - do NOT give corrective jerks/twitches of the leash as it can have a whiplash effect on the dog and can in extreme cases lead to spinal column injuries.

I'd far quicker recommend the use of the Ilusion collar as advocated by Cesar Millan. It still sits high up behind the ears but has a secondary collar type band lower down which spreads the "stress" along the neck thereby much reducing the risk of injury. Smile

The one I used and its a better design than the halti is the canny collar but again, Luka doesnt like it as much as the collar he has now

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and input, was not sure if it was something that I should try so bets to ask those who have had experience of them first.
When Fred is next to the road there is little or nothing that will break his focus, not even a gravy bone or treat under his nose, he is still trying to use my legs as a launchpad. Get him away from the side of the road and he quickly comes back into the zone where he will listen. I am assuming that this is a lot to do with the breed. We will work away at this one and get some solution, Blinkers and ear defenders should do the trick!!!

Hi Iain,

I have a 4 year old GSD and have been using a Halti on her since she was 8 months old; yes shes not overly keen on it but it is the best thing I have purchased with regards to controlling her as she is a very powerful dog. but every one to their own some people like other ones its up to you and the dog really.

I recommend the gentle leader after seeing + experiencing what a difference it has made with each dog we have fitted one with.
But go with whatever works best for you Very Happy

We've used halti's and gentle leaders, found the latter was better with our collie, Made walking her next to cars a bit easier(she use to try to herd them) She would still try sometimes but it wasn't as bad as when she was just on a flat collar or half-check...Don't use one on her anymore though

We used the gentle leader until his neck muscles got so strong it was a waste of time.

I think they canny collar is supposed to be better because the lead clips in behind the neck rather than at the front.
